In May, the Guardian Newspaper ran an article on the 50 most scenic campsites in Britain. Also that month, the Dutch equivalent of the Caravan & Camping Club stayed with them and were interested in doing a piece.
Maurice & Sylvia said: “It is important to have you’re business covered within the media, and advertising is expensive.
“We thought to ourselves should we spend money on advertising or on our campers, and hope word of mouth brings in more people? We chose our campers first and this has paid off for us, by providing those little extras eg, fridge and freezer, undercover cooking and eating facilities and trying to make their stay comfortable in all weathers.
“It turned out that the campers appreciated what we had done for them, and left positive feedback on many web sites. This was then noticed by the Guardian newspaper when picking 50 favourite campsites in Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
“As a result of their coverage, we have had 1,710 hits on the web counter and many bookings over the phone. A couple from Pembrokeshire were heading to the north of Scotland, but after seeing us in the Guardian they decided to stay at our site instead.
“We put our people first and are now getting lots of free publicity including a large article in the August edition of Practical Caravanner – they have a print run of 340,000. Also, we have been featured in two local papers and have just been visited by two Dutch reporters from a national camping magazine.”
