Peebles Traders Association drive up visitor numbers

Peebles Traders Association (PTA) has succeeded in driving up business and attracting an extra 17,400 visitors to the Borders town in 2007.
Research on a number of year-long marketing campaigns show visitor numbers were up 15% and local retailers, hotels, restaurants and inns benefited to the tune of an estimated £692,000.
During 2007 PTA undertook a number of marketing initiatives which included a high quality Peebles Town Guide, a new look website, a bus poster advertising drive, promotional postcards and a PR campaign in local and national media.
All played a part in showcasing the attractions of Peebles as a shopping and tourist destination. The report revealed 35% were first-time visitors to Peebles while the top activities when in the town were shopping, dining, walking and visiting a visitor attraction.
An evaluation report showed: • Peebles attracted an additional 17,400 visitors (total 133,400) in 2007 compared to 2006. • 13,920 were day trippers while 3,480 were overnight visitors. • Day trippers spent an estimated extra £92,600 locally. • Overnight visitors boosted the local economy by an estimated extra £599,200.
Peebles Traders Association is supported by 50 local businesses and has received funding from Scottish Borders Council, the Peebles Common Good Fund and VisitScotland’s Challenge Fund.
