The Delting Up Helly Aa, the last in Shetland’s fire festivals of 2008, will be held on Friday 21 March. The event, which involves a procession of more than 300 guizers carrying flaming torches through the darkened village streets of Brae, is highly regarded in Shetland, and well worth a look in for visitors.
When the marchers reach the shore, they fling their torches onto the ship as it is pushed out to sea. Afterwards, dances and reels are enjoyed in the nearby parish halls and community centres of Brae, Mossbank and Vidlin.
