Shetland Round Britain and Ireland race underway

The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland race got off to a flying start earlier this month, with some 40 competitors currently making their way round the 2,000 mile course.

The race was officially started in Plymouth by Shetland Islands Council convener Sandy Cluness and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail single-handed non-stop around the world. This is the first time in its 40-year history that a region has sponsored the Round Britain and Ireland Race.

A Shetland delegation were also in Plymouth to promote the islands before the start of the race, including a special “Shetland Day” celebration held at the Royal Western Yacht Club.

Amongst this year’s entrants are Shetland’s own Leslie Irvine, the only Scottish competitor to be taking part. He has teamed up with Dutchman Dick Koopmansto sail on Mr Koopmans’ 35ft yacht Jager, which is being sponsored by local firm Shetland Catch.
