Government Minister for Energy, Enterprise & Tourism, Jim Mather, met with local tourism representatives on Monday 18 August, during a visit to Orkney which formed part of his 2008 summer tour.
During a reception at the new travel centre in Kirkwall, the Minister was introduced to VisitOrkney and VisitScotland staff, and also took the opportunity to talk with staff from local five star accommodation providers Rickla House and Sebay Mill.
Speaking ahead of his visit, the Minister said: “I’m looking forward to being in Orkney, and having the opportunity to meet with local representatives from the tourism sector. It is vital that we as a Government are in touch with all of Scotland if we are to maintain our worldwide reputation as a tourist destination. Orkney clearly has a great deal to offer visitors and it will be great to see examples of continued investment such as the new visitor information centre, which will do much to enhance the visitors’ experience, and encourage them to explore the wealth of fantastic experiences across the islands.”
Islands Manager for VisitOrkney, Barbara Foulkes, added: “I’m delighted that Mr Mather will have the chance to meet our team and industry representatives and hear first hand about some of the opportunities and challenges arising in the current economic climate. Attracting more than 127,000 visitors annually, and bringing £27 million to the local economy, Orkney plays a very important role in Scottish tourism, and it’s great to see this being recognised with official visits like this. We look forward to welcoming him here.”
