Visitors to the Travel Centre in Kirkwall may be treated to a spot of live bird watching, thanks to a collaboration between VisitOrkney and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), who have set up a web cam link between a hen harrier’s nest in Rendall and the visitor information centre.
Carly Simpson, Marketing Executive for VisitOrkney, explains: “Visitors can now come into the travel centre and see hen harrier chicks and their mother – which just last week treated her hungry young to a whole rabbit! That made for quite a spectacle!”
This exciting project from RSPB Scotland aims to inspire people about Orkney's wonderful birds. You can follow life in the nest as it unfolds day by day. The residents of the nest are Mum and her 4 chicks. The chicks hatched over a few days so are all different ages.
Jenny Dewar, Aren't Birds Brilliant! assistant, together with a team of RSPB volunteers will be on hand most days between 10am and 4.30pm to explain what is happening inside the nest.
