VisitOrkney backing Old Beacon ‘Restoration’ campaign
VisitOrkney have been backing a campaign to encourage BBC viewers to vote for Dennis Head Old Beacon on North Ronaldsay to win substantial funds for its restoration.
Following the recent broadcast of the episode featuring the three Scottish contenders – Dennis Head Old Beacon, Cromarty East Church on the Black Isle and Greenlaw Town Hall in Berwickshire – organisers put together a weekend of events to raise awareness of Dennis Head Old Beacon and showcase Orkney’s unique historic appeal in a bid to persuade viewers to cast their vote for the 18th century lighthouse.
Taking part in the roadshow were River City actor Tony Kierney, who is ‘championing’ the Old Beacon during the series, representatives from the BBC, Historic Scotland, the Archaeological Society of Scotland, the Northern Lighthouses Board and VisitOrkney.
The live final will be broadcast on Sunday 17 September at 9:00pm and members of the public can vote for their favourite building by calling 09013 600 500.
More information on the ‘Restoration’ series and the other shortlisted buildings can be found on the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk/history/programmes/restoration/.
