Edinburgh Tourism Action Group – Visitor levy research
Edinburgh Tourism Action Group (ETAG) has recently published research into consumer views of the introduction of visitor levies (also known as bed taxes or transient visitor taxes.)
The group commissioned research into the use of Visitor Levies – one form of funding generator - in a number of cities which allows a view of how both some statutory (taxation based) and voluntary schemes work elsewhere. This research is available here.
Customer research was then commissioned to help understand the views of the consumer on paying an additional charge.
ETAG gathered further research carried out by Terry Stevens & View Marketing – who have a wealth of knowledge on the operation of successful tourism destinations world wide. This includes an information paper helping readers to gain a wider understanding of current issues, and series of case studies on how destinations have used various visitor payback schemes. This work is supported by a presentation, considering some of the key issues around schemes targeted at visitors.
