Eden Project founder Tim Smit is the keynote speaker at Tourism Innovation Day, 21st February 2007 at Edinburgh Corn Exchange. The theme is “Collaboration - Achieving Together” and you will also be able to hear Geoff Ellis, the man behind T in the Park and all about “Rembrandt 400”.
Eden opened in 2000, since when more than 6 million people have come to see this “cradle of life” that has had a pivotal role in regional tourism development. How did Tim come up with the ideas for Eden (and his other successes in Cornwall)? How does his organisation continue to use innovation to keep refreshing his product and attract repeat visitors? What has he learned about collaborating with tourism and related providers?
The theme is being developed by other speakers including Geoff Ellis, CEO of DF Concerts, a serial innovator and the man behind Scotland’s largest music festival T in the Park. Gerben Baaij is a key driver in the development and operation of “Rembrandt 400”, a thriving, destination-wide initiative in Amsterdam that has achieved over 2 million visits in 2006. It is the most successful cultural event ever held in the Netherlands – a country that is no stranger to culture!

Workshop 1
Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s award-winning business idea makes the most of its own artistic strengths and the wider attractions available in Highland Perthshire. It aims to generate valuable business during quieter months. The theatre used a TIDA win to develop a range of themed breaks around activities such as visual arts, creative writing, crafts, traditional music, performance, production and theatre skills, which were successfully launched in 2005.
ScotlandWhisky “See the Country, Taste the Spirit” aims to build on the opportunities presented by Scotland’s best known export as a reason to visit Scotland. A range of collaborative initiatives have resulted, including Scotch Whisky Embassies (accommodation providers), the Honorary Stallman and Whisky Loch Lomond.
Workshop 2
Rembrandt 400 has been both a cultural and economic success, transforming tourism in Amsterdam in 2006. An additional €100 million is expected to be spent by visitors to the Netherlands. In addition to the exhibitions as part of the core programme, a large number of other activities were also created including Rembrandt walks in Amsterdam and Leiden, the ice sculpture festival in Leiden and Rembrandt the Musical. These extra activities drew an additional 700,000 visitors. The total official programme has therefore attracted 2.7 million visitors to date. Our speaker Dr Baaij was formerly with the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, sits on the Rembrandt 400 Foundation and was actively involved in the entire project. This is your opportunity to tap in to his experience.
