Profitable growth for a sustainable future - new manifesto

The Scottish Tourism Forum (STF) has launched a manifesto for the Scottish tourism industry, ‘Profitable growth for a sustainable future’. The manifesto calls for a business agenda across all government levels which will work in partnership with the industry for the profitable and sustainable growth of Scottish tourism.

The joint tourism strategy set out by the private and public sectors in March this year, calls for a 50% growth between now and 2015. The STF support that ambition for the industry and wish to see it exceeded. This will be on a basis of profitable growth for the industry; a sustainable growth that will support re-investment in the product and the people who work in the industry.

The manifesto calls out for a business agenda to be at the heart of government, supported by a range of business incentive schemes that will in return attract higher levels of investment in our industry and a greater return for Scotland.

Sandy Dear of VisitScotland’s Sustainable Tourism Unit urged businesses to take up the challenge of developing Scottish tourism in a sustainable way. “Scotland’s environment, communities and culture are our greatest assets. We must place them at the heart of efforts to grow tourism by 50%, and ensure that growth is sustainable, economically, environmentally and socially.”

The manifesto sets forth the following six key themes:
• The customer experience - Skills and Quality
• E-Commerce
• Removing Barriers to Growth
• Transport
• A Sustainable Future
• Investment in Tourism
