A Hollywood director says he can’t wait to return to Scotland after filming scenes from a new blockbuster movie based on the Loch Ness Monster in the Highlands and Argyll. The Water Horse – Legend of the Deep is set to hit cinema screens around the UK from tomorrow (8th Feb) and Director Jay Russell says Scotland was an inspirational setting:

"For me, Scotland is the dictionary definition of 'magical’. The strong feeling of enchantment is all around. As a filmmaker, I found the ancient, mystical land to be a constant inspiration and the most spectacular visual setting a Director could ever hope for.”

VisitScotland has teamed up with Sony Pictures for a second time to promote Scotland to film fans around the world on the back of the blockbuster.

The Water Horse has already proved a hit with movie lovers in America since being released at Christmas and VisitScotland’s International PR Manager, Jenni Steele says:

“There has already been a sensational reaction to the film and its Scottish locations in the US. Our website has had over 39,000 hits in just 2 months and 27,000 entries to our competition to win a trip to Loch Ness. We’ve also been contacted by over 9000 potential US visitors wanting more information on holidays in Scotland after seeing the film.

“This goes to show that working in partnership with Sony has huge benefits in promoting Scotland around the world as the perfect destination for myths and legends – a theme which we use widely n our marketing overseas.

“This kind of approach is crucial if we are to meet our joint industry target to grow tourism revenues by 50% by 2015.

“We’re delighted that Scotland has captured the heart of Director Jay Russell and hope that he comes back soon.”
