Big fat problem for Nairn

Famed for its beaches and hospitality, the Highland seaside resort of Nairn is experiencing an unpleasant side effect from its popularity.

Scottish Water is issuing a plea to businesses and householders on the west side of the town following the discovery of a large amount of illegally-dumped fats, oils and greases causing blockages along a 100 metre stretch of sewer under Seabank Road.

The problem has already caused sewage to back up inside a customer's house in Seabank Road. Scottish Water is continuing to investigate to find the source of the fat. Waste water from a large area of western Nairn is pumped from the Altonburn and Seabank pumping stations along the Seabank Road sewer before flowing into the town centre system and out towards the waste water treatment works at Lochloy.

Businesses should know that there are specialist collection companies that can take away large quantities of fat and, in some cases, recycle it to make bio diesel fuel. Householders can turn cooking fats into cakes for garden birds or can simply bag it and bin it.
