Glasgow businesses have put in one of their best ever showings in the shortlist for this year’s tourism ‘Oscars’, The Scottish Thistle Awards, in the nominations announced by VisitScotland.

A total of seven nominations come from tourism businesses in the Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley area, who will compete for trophies at the glittering awards dinner at Edinburgh’s EICC on Friday 27 October:

- Glasgow Science Centre is shortlisted twice, in both the Business Tourism and Marketing Initiative categories
- House for an Art Lover is also shortlisted in the Marketing Initiative category
- The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour is nominated for the Off-Peak Success award
- The Carlton George and Glasgow Hilton hotels will compete in the Customer Care: Hotel category
- East Lochhead House and Cottages in Renfrewshire has been nominated in a new category for Sustainable Tourism

“This shortlist is a sign that Glasgow businesses take quality very seriously,” said VisitScotland area director Tom McWilliam. “It’s a sign of Glasgow’s growing stature in Scottish tourism and, especially with representation in the Off-Peak Success and Sustainable Tourism categories, it’s a sign that Glasgow is already making a contribution to the 50% growth agenda for 2015.”

Now in their 15th year, The Thistle Awards are recognised as one of the top accolades a Scottish tourism business can receive, rewarding businesses that consistently strive for quality and innovation. Over 260 entries were received for this year’s awards and the panel of judges was extremely impressed with the high standard of entries.

Tourism Minister Patricia Ferguson said: "The Thistle Awards reward the cream of Scotland's world-class tourism business and are the perfect platform for businesses throughout Scotland to showcase their top quality products and services, which are second to none.

"The awards recognise quality and excellence across the industry, celebrating the contribution of the tourism industry to Scotland's reputation as one of the world’s top tourist destinations," she said.
