Green light for arena boosts Games bid

Scotland's National Arena
Glasgow City Council has given the green light for the £62 million Scotland’s National Arena to be built at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, further strengthening the city’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
As part of the city’s bid for the Games, the 12,500 seat arena was proposed as the venue for events including gymnastics and the netball final, supporting other major events in the rest of the SECC site.
The arena was proposed principally as a venue for concerts by major artists, which are currently programmed into the SECC’s Hall 4. The SECC says that high demand for the hall means they have regularly had to turn business away or streamline the number of nights for some performances in order to accommodate the biggest events.
The arena has been designed by Foster & Partners, who also designed the Clyde Auditorium at the SECC, fondly nicknamed ‘the Armadillo’.
The arena now joins two other major new venues scheduled for completion in 2010: the National Indoor Sports Arena and the National Velodrome, both of which will be built in Dalmarnock.
Construction on the SECC site begins in late 2006 when multi-storey car parking will be developed to free the current car park space for the arena.
