£100 million expansion plan for St Enoch

A £100 million programme of improvements to Glasgow’s St Enoch Centre could be underway within three months, if new plans backed by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce are approved by the City Council.

Proposed in the plans are more restaurants, shops, a nightclub and a multiplex cinema, which would involve demolishing the Clydesdale Bank building and building an imposing new double ‘fin’ frontage on Argyle Street. The plans would increase the centre by a quarter and make St Enoch by far the largest shopping centre in Scotland.

The expansion is the latest proposal to extend Glasgow’s reach as a shopping destination, following news last month that key centres and retailers are to pilot late-night shopping 5 nights a week.

Dr Lesley Sawers, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “This significant investment would add to Glasgow’s tourist offering and further the city’s position as the top shopping destination outside of London.”
