Future Museum South-West is a creative web-based collaboration between the museum services of the south-west of Scotland. It aims to maximise access to our collections and deepen people’s understanding of the region's rich history.
The South-West is a dynamic region which has a strong history and local distinctiveness. This project has been designed to celebrate this by providing free and enhanced access to the museum collections of the region through a web site that will help define the region.
The project targets the needs of lifelong learners and those interested in our region, whether resident or visitor. It has a collection-driven theme which is built around the key areas that make the region so distinctive from the rest of Scotland. These themes will grow as the project grows and be supported by thought provoking interactives and resources aimed at lifelong learners.
Future Museum South-West has been developed by East Ayrshire Council and Dumfries and Galloway Council in collaboration with North and South Ayrshire Councils. The lead organisation is East Ayrshire Council. A number of other associate partners have been identified and have signed the partnership agreement (more will follow).
Collectively, the museum services and other visitor attractions across the Ayrshire/Dumfries and Galloway region of the South West attract approximately £1.2m visitors. The region is, however, clearly defined geographically with the coalfields, sea and hills. Historically, the collections have been shaped through this influence and a strong sense of identity has been created, making the South West a distinctive part of Scotland.
Future Museum South-West provides free access to the museum collections of Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway and creates a valuable resource for people of all ages, providing a fantastic new resource. Take a look at www.futuremuseum.co.uk.
