Talents of Local Design Students come to the fore

The skills and talents of local design students at Heriot Watt University in Galashiels were clearly evident at a recent Design Selection Evening at Council Headquarters in Newtown St. Boswells.

Third Year Print Design students at Heriot Watt were commissioned to develop a design for an ‘Our Scottish Borders Bag for Life’. The ‘Bag for Life’ project aims to change perceptions and habits by encouraging locals and visitors to use a reusable, recyclable bag when out shopping.

The students were asked to develop a design which would appeal to Borderers and visitors alike. The students were also asked to incorporate the ‘Our Scottish Borders’ branding into the design to help raise the identity and profile of the area www.ourscottishborders.com

Eight of the students’ designs were shortlisted and presented at the Design Selection Evening. The final design and designer was chosen by a group including Councillor Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Economic Development at Scottish Borders Council, Pamela McMahon from VisitScotland Borders, Alister McKinnon from Scottish Enterprise Borders, and representatives from various Chambers of Trade and Commerce groups, as well as independent textile consultant from Carruthers Associates.

Approximately, 10,000 bags will be printed & distributed free of charge. The Bag for Life project aims to change perceptions and habits by encouraging locals and visitors to use a reusable, recyclable bag. The priority is to reduce the wasteful use of plastic bags and minimise waste. The Project plans to complement current initiatives planned or underway by local towns as well as encourage locals to change their ‘shopping bag’ habits.
