Quick Update from around the Borders

The M&S Simply Food store opened in Gala Water Retail Park. The new store has various eco-features such as energy efficient lighting and heating, a lobbied entrance to minimise energy loss, and nesting boxes for Swifts.
Nick Nairn, celebrity chef, visited Whitmuir Farm near West Linton. Nick was looking at an initiative to offset methane produced by the farm by planting trees. This was part of the BBC Scotland programme, Landward.
Careers Scotland, learndirect Scotland and many of the skills and training functions of the local enterprise networks will merge into a new skills body by April 2008.
Hawick’s first farmers market was a great success, with 20 stands trading a variety of goods. Local businesses are welcome to take a stall and add to the range of products, which included cheese, poultry, venison, bread, chutney and hand-made soap.
Baxters Retail is looking for local suppliers for their Selkirk store, which is due to open in the spring.
Peebles Golf Club recently achieved the Award for Environmental Excellence. Only 30 golf courses in Europe have achieved recognition for their ability to minimise waste, reduce energy consumption and manage wildlife habitats.
Cringletie House, near Peebles was one of eight Scottish hotels to make it to the finals of the Conde Nast Johansens Excellence Awards. The hotel was shortlisted in the “Most Excellent Small Country Hotel” section.
Mackay’s of Eyemouth won various awards for their ice cream in December. Their banana ice cream won gold and the vanilla ice cream won a bronze award in the Artisan Class. The company also received various diplomas for lemon sorbet, coconut surprise, mint choc chip and champagne sorbet in the National Ice Cream Competition.
