Award-winning Apex Hotels continues to stay ahead of the hospitality ‘eco’ game with Scotland’s first green spa.
Since its opening in June 2004, under the auspices of Apex’s Environmental Director, Jo Harbisher, The Yu Spa at the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa, Dundee, has undertaken a number of measures to ensure that it reduces its impact on the environment.
These initiatives include:
- an ozone pool, which uses minimal chlorine;
- its hot tubs use ultraviolet lighting to clean themselves, which means using less chemicals;
- all its pool lights have been changed over to energy efficient LED lights, which is projected to save £57,000 per year;
- the gym equipment and televisions are switched off at night
- and members of the gym are provided with Yu Spa water bottles to encourage them to refill rather than buying plastic drinks bottles.
Other initiatives include the changing-room showers, which incorporate flow regulators as part of the mixer.
In the spa, Elemis treatment products, which are 100% natural and not tested on animals, are bulk bought, with dispensers being used, minimising wastage. In addition, the spa staff are trained on product measurements and are all COSHH trained (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
