Carnoustie to host 2007 international pairs UK final
The UK final of the International Pairs will be held at Carnoustie this year. In a major coup for the global golf competition, the stunning Scottish course will host the UK finalists on October 16 and 17.
The 36-hole final, which will determine International Pairs national men's, ladies and mixed champions, will be played over Carnoustie's Championship and Burnside courses. And the respective national winners from Carnoustie will go on to represent their countries at next year's International Pairs world final.
Carnoustie has regularly been described as the toughest of the Open Championship courses by many of golf's finest European Tour and PGA Tour professionals – and the Angus course will prove a fitting test for the UK finalists who will have battled through two rounds to reach the famed east coast of Scotland. And they will get a taste of the true nature of Carnoustie as it hosts The Open Championship in July – just three months before the UK final.
Graeme Duncan, the general manager of Carnoustie Golf Links, said: “Carnoustie Golf Links is proud to be hosting the UK final of the International Pairs 2007 which continues our association with this prestigious and very successful amateur event.
“Having the International Pairs final in October will bring to a close what should be a wonderful golfing year for Carnoustie, as we host the Open Championship in July.
Carnoustie Golf Links hosted one of the two rounds of last year’s International Pairs UK final, sharing the honour with Fairmont St Andrews, Scotland, while the Oxford Inns-owned four-star Carnoustie hotel was the players’ base and hosted the event’s lavish gala dinner.
A spokesman for Oxford Inns said: “Last year’s International Pairs UK final was a terrific success, and we look forward to more of the same and showing the finalists some true Scottish hospitality on and off the golf course.”
Ross Honey, who founded the International Pairs in 1998, was delighted by the announcement, saying: “Carnoustie has got an incredible reputation and truly has one of the finest golf courses in the world. Itt shows the regard in which the International Pairs is held that we are able to work with such prominent and respected venues.
“It’s a real privilege to work again with Carnoustie Golf Links and Oxford Inns, and I’m sure competitors all over the country will be trying even harder to secure their place on the fabled links.”
The International Pairs, dubbed the biggest golf tournament in the world for club golfers, has been backed by VisitScotland for the last five years – and the national Scottish tourist body has committed to be the tournament’s main sponsor until at least 2008.
