Braemar castle re-opens
Braemar Castle re-opened to visitors earlier this month. The early 17th century castle, which has been closed to the public since 2005, is now in the care of the village of Braemar. Local landowners, the Farquharsons of Invercauld, have handed the castle over to the community on a 50 year lease.
Since the village acquired the building in February last year, teams of volunteers have worked to get the castle into shape for the re-opening. A leaky Victorian wing at the rear of the building was demolished and rooms were re-painted and re-carpeted.
On show again are 12 rooms including the infamous “pit” or bottle neck dungeon which was once home to no fewer than 17 Cameron rebels, the elegant dining room and drawing room, the Laird’s bedroom with its handsome four poster bed and the glorious vintage plumbing of the Victorian bathrooms.
The Castle will now be open at weekends, or by appointment during the week, until the end of October.
